Celebrity divorces can teach Illinois residents lessons

It seems that every time we turn on the TV or radio, or happen to glance at a celebrity gossip magazine while checking out at the grocery store, yet another celebrity is getting a divorce. And while it is true that many of these scandals are filled with outlandish accusations, and at times seem to drag on forever, the truth is that beneath the surface there are lessons that Illinois residents can learn.

For example, take the very public and nasty divorce between Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin. At the time, it was reported that Basinger was trying to keep Baldwin out of their daughter’s life. This is a situation that any Illinois father could end up in.

In their case, it highlights the fact that not only is it important for both parents to stick to court-ordered child custody and visitation agreements, but it also sheds light on the fact that children deserve to have relationships with both of their parents. Many times, when let’s say mom tries to prevent their child from seeing dad, the child can grow up with resentments toward the parent who tried to stop that relationship from forming.

Aside from how children can play a role, celebrity divorces also show the importance of not saying negative things about an ex in public. For while Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries were married for less than three months, their divorce is still not yet finalized, in part due to the fact that Kardashian and her family have let emotions get in the way and have talked extensively about the situation with the media.

For the average Illinois resident, the take home message here is to use logic, not emotion, to make divorce decisions. And, to keep issues regarding the divorce between each other and a family law attorney.
