Let’s say you have filed for divorce in Illinois. You know you want to protect your rights as a father and you’d like to have a rough estimate of just what you’ll be paying in child support — and possibly alimony — if it’s applicable in your situation.
But, aside from talking to an experienced Illinois divorce attorney, what other preparation steps can you take after filing for divorce?
It turns out, that much like wedding planning, many are now putting efforts into divorce planning, with some even using apps on their iPhones and Android cellphones to be able to get an idea of what to expect.
For example, one free Google app that covers all states — including Illinois — tells a person what he or she can expect to owe in terms of child support. The app uses statutes and other factors that are often taken into account to give a rough estimation of what a person will end up being ordered to pay. Of course, this should not be taken as law, as the courts will make the final decision. But, it can be nice to have at least some idea of what will be asked and what to expect.
Other apps also allow for things like tracking expenses tied to alimony and child support, as well as a visitation schedule. This information — along with any emails sent between you and an ex-spouse — can then be easily forwarded on to an attorney should a legal situation arise.
In the end, if you decide to use these apps, remember that while the technology does provide insight, it should not take the place of legal counsel from a family law attorney.
