Fathers are awarded child support too

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Child Support on Friday, June 22, 2012.

In the context of talking about child support, many people assume that the mother is the custodial parent, and the father is paying child support on a weekly or monthly basis. However, this is not always true and there are plenty of situations where a father has custody and receives child support from the mother.

An example of this would be the fact that actress Halle Berry has been ordered to pay her ex $240,000 a year — or $20,000 a month — in child support for their 4-year-old daughter Nahla. This ruling came after years of the couple battling it out in court over custody.

Aside from the child support order, the case between Berry and her ex, model Gabriel Aubry, the fact that these two initially hoped to work out their child custody arrangement in a peaceful matter also highlights the fact that even though people may have the best intentions in the beginning, things can quickly spiral out of control as emotions run high and each want what is best for their child.

And while in this case the two were never married, in cases where divorce is on the forefront of a relationship, it is very possible for the situation to also quickly deteriorate. For example, a mother can claim she wants to work together and have a quick divorce, but then before anyone knows what happened, both parents are in court for a long drawn out battle over custody.

Because of how quickly a situation can change, any time divorce or any issues related to child custody is on the horizon, it’s a good idea to contact an attorney who has experience dealing with these types of family law issues to make sure that parental rights stay intact.
