Celebrity moms targeted for not allowing dads to see their kids

Many family law cases in Illinois don’t necessarily make the news. Families break up all the time these days, so getting a divorce is hardly a novelty. For movie stars, however, almost nothing is private. Celebrities who get married in the public eye often can’t expect privacy when they get divorced.

Just like people with ordinary jobs, celebrities have to deal with child custody issues. Where will the kids live when the parents are no longer living together? Because of the public nature of their careers, celebrities’ desires for keeping their children in their custody can come under fire by people who disagree with their methods — particularly when it comes to issues of fathers’ rights.

In the United Kingdom, several advertisements have been created depicting female movie stars — including Halle Berry, Kate Winslet, Katie Holmes and Kim Basinger — and criticizing them for their supposed desire for full custody of their children. The ads were produced by Fathers4Justice, which is a group promoting fathers’ rights in Great Britain. The group says the actresses are doing their kids a disservice by trying to keep the youngsters from getting equal time with their fathers.

The ads are provocative, but some question their accuracy. Winslet’s ex-husband has said that he appreciates the sentiments, but the depiction of Winslet trying to cut him out of her children’s lives isn’t accurate, and that people didn’t know the full story.

Fathers’ rights are still frequently given short shrift when it comes to divorce cases. An experienced child custody attorney can help to ensure that fathers’ rights are not ignored when they get divorced.
