American family focus, Part 2: a look at a gay-dads' support group

20664267_S.jpgWe noted in a recent blog post that divorce in the United States has been "the catalyst for many evolving family units, with blended compositions of virtually every scope" (please see our June 17 entry).

Put another way, the unique aspects of divorce in virtually every instance in Illinois or elsewhere result in post-divorce families of virtually every description. Sometimes moms have primary custody, with noncustodial dads having visitation rights. Sometimes that arrangement is reversed. Grandparents often play key roles in post-divorce matters involving children.

And so do gay parents. We noted in the above-cited post a support group for gay fathers that is growing in the Chicago metro. Below is some material information concerning that group.

The organization called the Gay Fathers of Greater Chicago (GFGC) was started recently by a divorced father of three children, a gay man who moved from Boston to Illinois and quickly noted a lack of support for gay dads.

The GFGC was created to fill that void, with monthly meetings for the group's rapidly expanding membership base focused upon providing information and resources to gay dads across the universe of relevant family law concerns.

Although those include child custody, support, visitation and other related considerations, of course, the GFGC also considers it important that gay fathers have the opportunity to build a broad support system, network and listen to speakers on a broad range of topics that are germane to gay parents in a general sense.

As noted, the group is rapidly growing

"We think that gay dads are not different from any other dads," says its founder.

"It's fatherhood that is the common link," he adds.
