Getting out of abusive relationships is important

41848878_S.jpgDomestic violence continues to be a pervasive problem in Illinois. A study that was conducted in Rockford demonstrates the severity of the issue.

According to Remedies Renewing Lives, the organization found that between 25 and 30 percent of all of the criminal cases that are filed in Rockford are crimes of domestic violence. The Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence reports that 61 people in Illinois have been killed during this year, and the number of fatalities has increased over those in prior years. Winnebago County has had 3,500 cases involving domestic violence so far in 2017, but fortunately, no one has been killed.

A spokesperson for Remedies Renewing Lives said that if everyone in a community believed that domestic violence was wrong, then it would stop happening. The Rockford Police Department said that it is focused on early intervention programs to help victims to get out of abusive relationships before they worsen. Domestic violence is a problem that has consequences far beyond the people who are involved in the relationships. When it happens, their families and communities may also suffer negative impacts.

Victims of domestic violence should seek help with getting away from their abusers. They might want to go to domestic violence shelters and file criminal reports with law enforcement officers. Family law attorneys may help them to request protective orders against their abusers so that they can get out of their relationships. If they are married, the attorneys may also help them with filing petitions for divorce. Parents who have children might want help with informing the family court about the abuse. When domestic violence is at issue, judges may grant supervised parenting time to the abusers or limit their parenting time in other ways. Remaining in abusive relationships may ultimately result in serious assaults or deaths.
