Protecting children’s college savings in divorces

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Property Division on Saturday, October 21, 2017. When Illinois residents are going through divorces, they might wonder what they should do about the college savings that they have accumulated for their children. College savings should be clearly addressed in their property settlement agreements to prevent their ex-spouses from spending the money on themselves or on others in the future. People who are getting divorced might worry that their ex-spouses may spend money in their children’s college savings accounts on children of new spouses or on themselves. In order to prevent these

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Military Divorce on Friday, October 13, 2017. Military personnel in Illinois are likely aware of the Blended Retirement System set to go into effect in January 2018. The system will impact not only military retirement, but many other aspects of military life as well. Knowing that it is in the best interests of the child or children to have a strong relationship with both parents, divorcing spouses will often work diligently to set aside their differences and develop a custody plan that works for everyone involved. Still, emotions can run high at this difficult time. In many cases, parents can negotiate child custody issues between themselves and develop a workable parenting plan. However,

Consequences of nonpayment of child support

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Child Support on Tuesday, September 19, 2017. Noncustodial parents in Illinois are often ordered by the state court to pay child support. Time in jail is an option if the amount of the support is significant or the parent simply refuses to pay. If the amount isn’t particularly high or there are circumstances preventing the support from getting paid when ordered, such as the paying parent’s loss of a job,
