More about the changes in Illinois’ Parentage Act for 2016

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Child Custody on Saturday, January 2, 2016. Last week, we discussed Illinois’ Parentage Act of 2015, and how it will introduce different terminology into the state’s family law statutes. The words we use can make a big difference. For example, as we mentioned back on Dec. 24, state law will now use the gender-neutral term “parent” instead of “mother” and “father” in child custody and child support matters. This recognizes that many children in the state have parents of the same sex, and that parental rights are not affected by that

Working together – A collaborative approach to divorce

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Child Custody on Thursday, December 31, 2015. When couples decide to end their marriage, there are a lot of issues to discuss. Sometimes those discussions can get pretty heated and the end result is a drawn out battle, higher legal fees and in the end, the judge makes the final decision. If that happens, many couples feel like they both were cheated out of what they wanted. Issues like these have the most negative impact when children are involved. However, what if there was an option where you and your ex

Illinois’ amended Parentage Act takes effect in 2016

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Child Support on Thursday, December 24, 2015. The calendar is about to turn over to a new year. In Illinois as in other states, this means that new laws passed by the General Assembly will soon take effect. One of the major pieces of legislation to come out of the Assembly this year was a comprehensive update to the Parentage Act. As the Illinois Bar Journal explains, the Parentage Act of 2015 is the first rewrite of the statute since 1984, and brings the law up to date in several ways.

Luckily, there is a lot of advice available out there on not just surviving the holidays after a divorce, but

Spousal support could be involved in Green-Fox divorce

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Child Custody on Friday, October 9, 2015. For those who pay attention to tabloids and celebrity news, this will be common knowledge: actress Megan Fox and her soon-to-be-former husband Brian Austin Green have filed for divorce after five years of marriage. The couple has two sons together, and apparently they are going for joint custody, though that hasn’t been confirmed. However, Green has asked that Fox pay him spousal support. This divorce, though a celebrity divorce (which don’t always involve circumstances that everyday people can relate to), brings up two topics

Bitter battles not a prerequisite for protecting fathers’ rights

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Child Custody on Friday, September 25, 2015. Under family laws in Illinois, fathers have the same rights and obligations as mothers. Although the letter of the law does not preference one parent over another based on gender, divorce settlements and custody orders don’t always reflect that ideal. Dads need a strong advocate to make sure that their rights are adequately protected, but does this mean that they have to fight to win? Do they have to tear down the other spouse to get their way? The answer is simply, “No.” Collaborative
