Should police run criminal checks on domestic abuse victims?
On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Domestic Violence on Wednesday, March 20, 2013. As a society, we tend to focus on domestic violence from the standpoint of a wife or girlfriend being abused. And while there are certainly plenty of cases where in abusive relationships this is the case, it is also important to keep in mind that abuse can go both ways and that there are plenty of husbands and boyfriends who are in abusive relationships. In all of these abuse situations, the person abused should know there are strict laws in Illinois meant to protect
Jury does not believe allegations; father awarded custody
On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Domestic Violence on Thursday, March 14, 2013. If you are an Illinois father getting ready to go through a divorce, be prepared for the fact that your ex-wife may attempt to make up completely preposterous stories in order to get the upper hand in court. This can be anything from abuse allegations to having a history with drugs. All of these allegations, if not properly defended against, can have an impact on child custody and visitation. Take for example the recent child custody ruling between NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders
Illinois parents: Does booting a car for unpaid child support work?
On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Child Support on Thursday, March 7, 2013. There are plenty of Illinois parents who wind up in jail over not paying their child support. However, this system is sometimes criticized as being incarcerated makes it even harder for a parent to remain employed and be able to pay back what is owed. Recently, one county started to take a new approach to unpaid child support. Instead of making an arrest and brining the parent to jail, a special device known as a boot is placed on the parent’s car. This device
Lamar Odom in the news for ongoing child custody dispute
On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Child Custody on Wednesday, March 6, 2013. Over the years basketball player Lamar Odom has been in the news a number of times. Whether it is due to his basketball career, or the fact that the 6-foot-10-inch athlete is married to Khloe Kardashian, his name is frequently making headlines. Recently though, it wasn’t for basketball or Kardashian. Rather, Odom fell asleep in court while attorneys were discussing the ongoing child custody battle between himself and his ex-girlfriend, Liza Morales. Morales and Odom were together for close to a decade and have
Part 2: Is Illinois due for child support reform?
On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Child Support on Friday, February 8, 2013. Today’s post will continue on the topic covered in our post earlier this week. We were discussing the model or system used in Illinois when calculating child support payments after parents choose to divorce or separate. Although there is some agreement among lawmakers that Illinois should change to an income shared model as opposed to its current system of “percentage of obligatory net income,” lawmakers are still trying to draft legislation to present to the General Assembly. This legislation was actually expected last spring,
Part 1: Is Illinois due for child support reform?
On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in Child Support on Wednesday, February 6, 2013. Almost two years ago, the Illinois Child Support Advisory Committee made recommendations on changing how Illinois calculates child support payments. Currently, 38 other states have already reformed the models used in the 1980s to determine child support, but Illinois is not among them. The state does not appear to be motivated to act quickly on updating its outdated child support system. Many fathers are no doubt very interested in seeing some change on the state level when it comes to child support issues. One
