Balloons released for domestic violence month in Illinois

7906412_s.jpgOctober is designated as Domestic Violence Month. In order to raise awareness regarding the issue, The Women's Center in Southern Illinois participated in and organized a number of events in the state. The goal was to honor domestic violence victims, while also getting the point across that domestic abuse is not just an individual's issue as it affects the entire community. Therefore, the community needs to work together to end domestic violence.

DNA paternity tests a must for unwed fathers establishing rights

15202259_s (1).jpgChild support, child custody and father's rights: These are just three of the family law categories that an Illinois father can learn from the recent tabloids that reality TV star Pauly D fathered a child he has never met. While these Pauly D stories -- whose real name is Paul DelVecchio -- are still ripe with gossip, the underlying issues are ones many men have found themselves faced with before.

Military members offered certain protections during divorce

19808345_s.jpgDivorce is complicated and hard on anyone. However, those who are in the military can wind up facing unique challenges that civilians simply will not face during a divorce. Of course though, this being said, there are certain protections offered to those in the military to deal with these issues.

Update: Father's employee perks factored into child support

7293964_s.jpgBack in June we posted about a father who did not want his employee perks to be included as income when calculating how much he owes in child support. This request came after the man asked for a reduction in how much he was already paying in child support. He based his modification request around the fact that his salary was cut in half due to a decrease in enrollment in the college he is the president of.

Hiding assets in divorce can lead to criminal consequences

10417921_s.jpgThere are cases when protecting assets in a divorce is worth the fight. However, this fight should be done with an attorney within the confines of the law. Never should a husband or wife attempt to hide assets, as this can end up taking a case from family court to criminal court.

Part 1: The benefits of prenuptial agreements

12172964_s (1).jpgAfter announcing an engagement and putting the time into planning for a wedding, many Illinois couples bypass one important step: creating a prenuptial agreement. Granted, many couples choose not to create a prenuptial agreement, believing the tales that this type of agreement will only set a couple up for divorce. However, the truth is taking the time to talk about finances and create an agreement together really gives couples the chance to share how they feel about financial decisions, while also protecting assets.

Communication and consistency important for children of divorce

10096783_s.jpgWhen two parents decide to divorce, how they break the news to their children and how they go about setting up visitation schedules afterwards can be crucial. This is one area where parents certainly want to put a lot of planning into in order for their children to not harbor any resentment later on down the road.

How divorced parents handle financial aid applications

22079240_s.jpgWhen it comes to applying for financial aid, divorced parents often struggle when it comes to who should fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, commonly referred to as FASFA. Should it be the custodial parent? Does who pays child support play a role in who should file? What about a stepparent? Should there information be included?
